There are many ways you can browse pictures on the Austin Map Project, and new categories and organizational methods are frequently being added. Take a look below at the ways you can look through the growing database. Click on the title above the description for each method to go to it. More detailed explanations, including graphics, will be added to this page soon.
You can navigate the pictures by their geographical location using the map applet in the right frame. Its functions are simple and intuitive to use:
· Click on the + or arrow to load the corresponding picture in this frame
· Left-click elsewhere on the map or type + (plus) to zoom in
· Type - (minus) or right-click to zoom out
· Use the arrow keys to pan left/right/up/down
· Use the navigation bar at the bottom to move manually between zoom levels
You can use the search page to search for images by their titles, locations, or descriptions. Eventually you will also be able to use the search page to browse picture by time of day, artist, and several other specifications.
Many pictures are grouped by special, predefined categories, such as restaurants, roads, or concerts. Each of these categories has many sub-categories, such as Zilker Park, FM 2222, and Austin City Limits, respectively. If you contribute a picture, you may move your picture into as many of these categories as you wish. This provides another way to group similar pictures. If you are a registered member, you may also add a new category. In general, categories are not added until there is a picture to be placed there.
This is similar to categories, but is user-dependent, so each picture set can only contain pictures by one user. Users create them, and can edit what pictures are in or not in them, and the order they're in. Artists often post a series of pictures that are obviously related, and this provides a way to link them together. Users are also encouraged to group their pictures in interesting ways using this feature.
This is a page which allows you to quickly see pictures at various extremes. It shows the newest and oldest pictures, most and least recently added, most popular and least popular, most viewed and least viewed, etc.
The Picture Sets and Categories features are the newest methods of browing pictures. Many more methods of browsing are still to come. Check back to this page or to the updates thread on the forums.
